Lawn bowling youth invasion at Holmby Park

Lawn bowling is relaxing yet fun and can get quite competitive.
Lawn bowling is relaxing yet fun and can get quite competitive.

By Brian Thomas Smith

On Saturday May 16, about 120 of my fun loving friends celebrated the “10th annual BTS Lawn Bowling Tournament” at Holmby Park.

This tradition began as a healthy way to get my young group of friends together (most are in their 20s and 30s) and enjoy an outdoor activity for my birthday. Similar to bocce ball, or golf, or any other outdoor leisure activity, lawn bowling is relaxing yet fun and could be quite competitive. I could not be happier to have stumbled upon this sport 10 years ago.

I have been a member of HPLBC for eight years and at the end of this tournament each year my friends have so much fun that about a dozen of them also became members.

The bowlers at beautiful and secluded Holmby Park play each week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10:30 am to 2 pm. It’s a lovely and successful integration of all ages and genders.

Lawn bowling is an easy sport to learn but challenging to master.

Going into my own tournament I always thought I was a master. However out of the 10 years I’ve only won it once. It seems that I still have a lot more to learn of this fascinating sport.

On weekends I can’t wait to get back on the grass and roll them again at gorgeous Holmby Park.

This event has grown from 30 people in 2005 to more than 120 over the past decade with the help of the friendly members of the Holmby Park Lawn Bowling Club. The club is located at 646 Comstock Ave., Los Angeles.
