Northridge resident Alison Williams today won a bronze medal in the synchronized swimming duet competition, the first U.S. medal of the 2015 Pan American Games, then was part of the U.S. squad that won the bronze medal in the team competition in Toronto.

Williams and partner Mariya Koroleva of Concord entered today’s free routine finals at CIBC Aquatics Center in third and scored 83.8667 points to finish third with an overall score of 166.3876 to edge the Brazilian duo of Luisa Borges and Maria-Eduarda Miccuci, who had 163.2667.

“It’s an honor to represent Team USA and be the first ones to get a medal,” said Williams, who also won a silver medal in the team competition in the 2011 Pan American Games.

Williams was originally listed as a reserve for the duet competition, which began Thursday with the technical routine.

Williams was also part of the nine-member U.S. team that won the bronze medal in the team competition with 166.0351 points, with Brazil finishing fourth with 163.7605. Canada won with 178.1094, while Mexico was second with 172.5073.

The 25-year-old Williams will next compete in the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, beginning July 24.
