On Tuesday, the Rams announced their first signing since NFL owners gave them permission to return to Los Angeles — former Northwestern quarterback Kain Colter.
Colter spent the 2014 season on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad as a receiver and was released by the team in May.
“Thanks to the Los Angeles Rams for giving me another opportunity to play football and earn a spot on the team. #Blessed,” Colter wrote on his Instagram account.
Colter twice received All-Big Ten honorable mention, was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, graduating with a degree in psychology, and was a co-captain for the Wildcats for two seasons.
Colter is second in Northwestern history in passing efficiency rating (139.0), fifth in career rushing touchdowns (28) and eighth in career rushing yards (2,180), first among quarterbacks.
Colter started 12 of 13 games at quarterback in 2012, helping lead the Wildcats to a 10-3 record and a 34-20 victory over Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl.
Colter missed most or all of five games as a senior in 2013 when Northwestern was 5-7.
Colter is a co-founder of the College Athletes Players Association, which describes itself as a labor organization established to assert college athletes’ status as employees with the right to collectively bargain for basic protections.
