Saint John’s 2011 Caritas Gala Honors Pierce Brosnan and Donald L. Morton, MD

Each year, the Saint John’s Health Center Foundation and the Irene Dunne Guild host the Caritas Gala to honor those who demonstrate compassion and concern for others through exceptional service to the community. This year they will be recognizing Pierce Brosnan with the Caritas Award and Donald L. Morton, MD, with the Spirit of Saint John’s Award.

Two-time Golden Globe Award nominee Brosnan is internationally known for his work both in front of the camera and behind-the-scenes as a producer. The extraordinary passion that Brosnan brings to his family, his profession and his community reflects the true spirit of Caritas. It is for this and his great friendship to Saint John’s that he is being honored with the award.

Dr. Morton is being recognized with the Spirit of Saint John’s Award for his life-saving contributions to cancer research at John Wayne Cancer Institute at Saint John’s. His pioneering innovations, such as the Sentinel Lymph Node Technique, have changed the way cancer is analyzed, detected and treated around the world, and it has become the standard of care for melanoma and breast cancer. As JWCI’s Chief of the Melanoma Program and Director of the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program, Dr. Morton started the Institute 30 years ago and has transformed it into a world-renowned cancer center. So far, JWCI has trained more than 120 of the best and brightest young surgeons who are now serving as leaders at major cancer centers across the nation, where they provide specialized care and lead research teams.

This year’s Caritas Gala will be taking place at the Beverly Wilshire on the evening of Oct. 15. Proceeds from the Gala benefit the Health Center’s programs and services such as the Child and Family Development Center, Women’s Health Services and the Irene Dunne Guild Gift Shop. As a nationally recognized hospital, Saint John’s is dedicated to providing breakthrough medicine with inspired healing and is continuously pushing to improve the health center and the care it provides. Funds, such as those raised through the Caritas Gala, are vital to patient care and allowing Saint John’s to continue providing cutting-edge treatments. This year’s major Dinner Chair sponsors include Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD, and Michele B. Chan; the John Wayne Cancer Center Foundation; and Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson.
