Saint John’s Health Center will present a free community education forum – Your Health and Life — Perspectives, Decisions and Conversation on End of Life Care, Advance Directives and Palliative Care – on National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) Tuesday, April 16, 2013 2:00pm – 4:00pm and again on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Santa Monica Public Library Auditorium.
Lecture topics and speakers will include: “End of Life Medical Care—An Emergency Room Physician’s Perspective†by Russ Kino, MD (Tuesday afternoon), the Medical Director of Saint John’s Emergency Services; End of Life Medical Care—A Physician’s Perspective†by Jonathan D. Weaver, MD (Wednesday evening), a specialist in Internal Medicine with subspecialty in Geriatrics; “Palliative Care, Comfort Care or Hospice—The Right Care at the Right Time†by Brian Madden, MD, the Medical Director of Saint John’s Palliative Care Program; The Gift of “Five Wishes†® Advance Directive†by Cynthia Lane, RN, the Director of Saint John’s Case Management and Social Services; and “The POLST—Physician Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment†by Paul Schnieder, MD, FACP, the President of the Southern California Bioethics Committee Consortium and member of the West Los Angeles POLST Coalition.
National Healthcare Decisions Day is celebrated each year on April 16 and is in its sixth year. Last year more than 40,000 members of the general public received direct information about NHDD and/or advance directives/advance care planning. Getting care a patient wants when he or she needs it the most can be assured with pre-planning.
