Santa Cecilia Orchestra Launches Season on Friday, October 15, 2010

Sonia Marie De Léon de Vega, ConductorThe Santa Cecilia Orchestra (SCO) 2010-2011 Season will run through May 22, 2011 with five concerts taking place at Center for the Arts in Eagle Rock and Thorne Hall at Occidental College. SCO is fulfilling its mission by offering full orchestra concerts, chamber concerts and its nationally acclaimed Discovering Music Program.

The October 15th opening season evening begins with a wine reception, followed by the concert and concludes with desserts and a silent auction. The price for tickets to the Opening Season Celebration is $75 and avail at scorchestra.org/201011orderform.html#FundraiserConcert/.

The price for all other concerts during the 2010-2011 season is $26/$20 for adults and $7 for children.

Recognized as a noted symphony and opera conductor, De Léon de Vega has achieved distinction as a creative and consummate musician, as a woman in a groundbreaking career role and as a leading influence in the growing U.S. Latino culture. She was the first Hispanic classical artist to ever be featured internationally on the Univision network’s signature “Orgullo Hispano†(Hispanic Pride), which highlights the most successful Hispanics in the world. De Leon de Vega is also celebrated in educational circles for creating the dynamic Discovering Music program that continues to change the lives of thousands of youth each year through the power of music education. She has received numerous awards and recognitions and is featured in the Simon & Shuster book Latina Power by Ana Nogales.

The October 15 opening season concert and fundraiser will feature the string orchestra performing music in an intimate setting. Music by Respighi and selections from Vivaldi’s and Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons†with violin soloist Mark Menzies.

Maestra De León de Vega conducts two passionate masterworks, Brahm’s Third Symphony and Vieuxtemp’s Violin Concerto No. 5 with brilliant Sphinx Competition winner, virtuoso Danielle Belen. Also featured is Mendelssohn’s Hebride’s Overture, which combines mesmerizing instrumental writing with the swirling visual soundscapes of a sea voyage.

Associate concertmaster Yi-Huan Zhao and SCO cellist Beth Park- Zhao join special guest artist, pianist Natasha Marin. The concert will feature music for solo piano as well as duets and end with the dazzling Mendelssohn trio.

Baroque and Tango? Maestra De León de Vega, the string section of the orchestra and SCO soloists explore time (Baroque) and place (Argentina) in a chain of gem-like pieces for string orchestra. Soloists include Salpy Kerkonian and Alexander Kalman. In this concert, the audience will hear the individual talents of SCO musicians in repertoire ranging from the virtuosity of Vivaldi to the genius of Bach and the passion of tango master Astor Piazzolla. Welcome the celebrated radiance of SCO special guest artist, pianist Natasha Marin.

Santa Cecilia Orchestra once again celebrates the glory of México! SCO plays the music of great Mexican composers and has a long history of promoting the talent of Mexico and other Latino composers. SCO presents music of Daniel Catán, Mexico’s pre-eminent living composer. The 80-piece symphony orchestra will also include 14 percussionists to perform Silvestre Revueltas’s La Noche de los Mayas (The Night of The Mayas). La Noche de los Mayas hurls itself at an audience like a Mexican Rite of Spring. Extravagant sonorities, panoramic scene-painting and driving rhythms abound in this magnificent work. Que Viva México!
