SMC Faculty Artist in West Adams Tour – Mar. 26

Artist Jenny HagerJenny Hager, an artist on the faculty of Santa Monica College, will show a selection of her recent paintings at the West Adams Heritage Association (WAHA)’s 2nd annual ‘Art in Historic Places’ tour, “Celebrate the Arts – Artists of West Adams,†on Saturday, March 26.

While the historic and architecturally impressive residences of Historic West Adams are quite well known, fewer people are aware that inside, creativity abounds. Dozens of established and emerging artists work and/or live in West Adams. On March 26, the public will be able to experience not only the homes but also artists who create artworks within their walls.

The March 26 tour will showcase works by some of West Adams’ most talented artists, working in media and subject matter from classic to cutting-edge contemporary. The tour will open the dooone of Jenny Hager's worksrs of a variety of turn-of-the-century and post-World War I residences, including Craftsman bungalows and Spanish villas.

Last year’s Art in Historic Places tour was so successful that WAHA and the artists in West Adams have decided to make it an annual happening, with new participating artists as well as returnees presenting new bodies of work, all in the artists’ own homes and studios. This year’s artists and venues include (partial list):

Jenny Hager received her BA from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., and her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. She also studied at the New York school of Drawing, Painting, and Sculpture from 1994 to 1996. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, including numerous local area showings. Hager was a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Foundation award in 1999, and received a second grant from the foundation in 2005. She is currently on the faculty of Santa Monica College. www.jennyhager.com

Tickets are $25 in advance (deadline, postmarked by March 15) and $30 at the door. To purchase advance tickets, send check, made out to “WAHA,†to WAHA Tour, 2209 Virginia Rd., Los Angeles, CA 90016. Prepaid tickets will be held at check-in, 1824 S. 4th Avenue (at Washington Blvd., the c.1934 Majestic Pharmacy, a restored commercial-mixed use building). This is a self-guided drive-yourself (or bike-yourself) tour, with a brochure and map that will guide visitors to these historic venues, toured in any order and at their own pace. Visitors are encouraged to set aside several hours to enjoy the tour.

• Living History Tour at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery, Saturday, September 24
• Holiday Historic Homes Walking Tour & Progressive Dinner Tour, Saturday-Sunday, December 3-4.
The Art in Historic Places tour will be presented yearly on the last Saturday in March.

The tour will raise funds for the West Adams Heritage Association, a nonprofit organization founded in 1983 to support preservation of the community’s architectural and cultural heritage. WAHA has grown from a small resident support group to a recognized preservation voice with hundreds of members who live in the many neighborhoods of the Historic West Adams District.
