“The Martian” opened to a stellar response from movie customers, and was the number one film this weekend domestically.
The latest “Matt Damon in space” movie was on track to sell $55 million in tickets in the United States and Canada this weekend, according to studio estimates gathered by industry analysts at Rentrak.
“Hotel Transylvania 2” was second, in its second week of showings, with $33 million in estimated receipts. Its running total was $90.5 million.
And third place was held by “Sicario,” with $12 million in weekend sales.
Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies in the U.S. and Canada, as estimated by the studios and collated by Rentrak, were “The Intern” ($11.6 million), “Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” ($7.7 million), “Black Mass” ($5.9 million), “Everest” ($5.5 million), “The Visit” ($3.9 million), “War Room” ($2.8 million) and “The Perfect Guy” ($2.4 million).
