Turning Point School collaborates with P.O.P. Studios in Culver City

Turning Point students creating artwork for the P.O.P GalleryAs part of Turning Point School’s tradition of community service, service learning, and collaboration with the Culver City community, the student body has created an art exhibit open to the public free of charge.

The installation, “Macrocosmos Meets Microcosmos†, was completed in art classes at Turning Point. The “Micro†section of the installation piece consists of clay insects flying and crawling around a huge paper flower made of old newspaper. The “Macro†section of the installation includes planets hanging from the ceiling (made of recycled paper) and oil pastel paintings of star constellations, planets, and black holes.

The K-1 students visited P.O.P. Studios on April 11 to see their work, and created more art for the gallery while they were there. The students deFinished art on displaysigned murals using stamps and prints created from recycled materials (including vegetables and old cardboard box cut-outs as stencils). The goal was a moment of artistic freedom within a professional art studio space. You can view the goal achieved as the murals now hang from the ceiling of the gallery.

The Turning Point parent body and members of the Culver City community joined together in celebration of student art and the collaboration between a vibrant Culver City business and the Turning Point School on Wednesday April 13 from 2:30-4:30, with a gallery opening.

Hannah Henderson and John Moore are owners and manager of P.O.P. Studios, and they found the collaboration with Turning Point a positive experience and look forward to the next student gallery opening in the fall.

The current student gallery will be taken down on Monday, April 18, to make way for their next visiting artist group, Sunset Circles. SUNSET CIRCLES is a collection of work from a circle of artists inspired by “the Sunset”, an artistic community nestled in the dunes of San Francisco. The show will be up from April 22 – June 10.
