“Hair is magical. You can do more with hair than an artist can do with a paintbrush,†says Umberto Savone of the Umberto and U/Umberto LA Salon salons. “Even on rainy days,†I ask as I notice that the weather forecast calls for showers. Umberto, responsible for the locks of lovelies such as Christina Applegate, Selma Blair and Cheryl Hines amongst other bold faced names, assures me that if I address the cause of my rainy day hair blues that I can avoid a coiffure catastrophe.
“Dry hair is frizzy hair so when it rains, it frizzes because it lacks moisture so when there is a lot of moisture in the air – either when it rains or is very humid — hair soaks it up from the environment,†Umberto explains sounding like the Trichologist and former National Style Director for Revlon’s Fermodyl Interactives that he is, “and too much moisture causes the hair strands to get big and puffy.â€
So, moisturizing one’s mane, rain or shine, is key to avoiding a head which resembles the kitsch of a Chia pet, “fill the hair cuticle with moisture by using Leave-In Conditioner,†says Umberto recommending his own Umberto Controller. †Once the cuticle is filled with moisture there is no room for it to absorb the environmental moisture. Then seal the exterior of the cuticle with Roman Oil if the hair is relatively straight. If it is curly use a curl cream like Curl Enhancing Lotion and for fine hair use shine spray [like his eponymous Shimmer] to seal the cuticle without adding weight, †he concludes again referencing his own line which will soon introduce U Color line of hair color which will be packaged in no measure sachets so that everyone can get salon-style color in the comfort of their home.
And, if you can hang with a casual look on a rainy day, you can leave in a deep conditioning treatment and let the raindrops enhance the treatment. Regardless of how you style your hair on a moist day, Umberto advises us to, “not fight your natural hair texture. Pony tails or organic styles that take hair way from the face and allow the hair to do its thing,†concluding that once again, working with Mother Nature, (along with some great products and the talented Umberto) is better than fighting her.
