Westside Gadget Guy

With everybody watching American Idol on television, listening to John and Ken on KFI Radio and, of course, browsing on the Internet, who has time to read a book anymore? Think again! How would you like to be able to buy a book, not just any book, but a magical book? A book right out of Harry Potter, with powers allowing you to have a hundred books in one, giving you the ability to add more at anytime in a matter of seconds and to listen to great audio books and even to surf the Web. This would be one heck of a book, wouldn’t it? Well stop practicing your magic spells to make the magic book appear, because the good people at Amazon.com have done the heavy lifting for you. Put down that hardcover that weighs three pounds or your coffee stained paperback with the bent and broken spine and grab yourself the Amazon Kindle.

The Amazon Kindle is an electronic book, or “eBook†, weighing in at a laughable 10.3 ounces. The Kindle is about the size of a standard hardcover, 7.5 inches by 5.3 inches, but only the thickness of a pencil, give or take. You simply turn on this small eBook, push a few buttons on the full keyboard and your favorite book will magically appear within seconds. You can download and store hundreds of books, almost like having a library with you at all times.  You turn the pages with the click of a button and, although no pages actually turn, the screen changes to display the next page. It uses eInk, which is similar to the old etch-a-sketch screens. Thus, unlike a computer screen, it is very easy on the eyes and very frugal with battery usage. If that isn’t enough, you can also push a few buttons and get the most up-to-date copy of your favorite magazine or newspaper to read as well.

It doesn’t matter where you are or what time it is, everything is wirelessly delivered to your Kindle when you want it. It comes with headphones and yes, a computer jack, just in case you want to do things like add your favorite audio book or copy music from your home CD collection to it. Need to take a break from reading on your eBook? You can use the included Internet browser to go online and check your e-mails or perform any of the other important online tasks you, no doubt, have to do.

Whether you like to read or are trying to get your youngsters to enjoy reading – this can be your tool of choice. This can be your way to keep your love of reading alive and still satisfy your craving for the latest and greatest gadget…or wait, is that just me?
